Parking Brake

There are three types of parking brakes.

1. Pedal-type
Parking Brake

While stepping down on the brake pedal with your right foot, step down on and push the parking brake pedal as far down as it will go with your left foot. To release, step down on the parking brake pedal again.

2. Lever-type
Parking Brake

While stepping down on the brake pedal, pull up the parking brake lever as far as it will go.
To release, raise the lever up slightly, and while pushing the button, return it completely to its lowered position.

3. Electronic-type
Parking Brake

The parking brake automatically activates through operation of the shift lever.
The parking brake automatically activates when the shift lever is put into the P position, and is automatically released when the brake pedal is stepped on, and transmission is put into any other position than P, such as the D position.

(Manual Mode)
Pull up the switch to apply the parking brake.
To release, press down the switch.

  • In emergencies, when the parking brake must be applied while driving, continuously pull up the switch.

How to Start the Engine

Operate the car with the electronic key on you. Check that the parking brake is applied.

Check that the shift lever is in the P position.

Firmly step down on the brake pedal. The Smart Entry and Start System signal light turns on.

Press the engine switch. Continue stepping down on the brake pedal until the engine starts up.

How to Turn Off the Engine

Operate the car with the electronic key on you. Stop the car completely. Move the shift lever to the P position.

Apply the parking brake.

The engine will turn off when you press the engine switch.

Smart Entry & Start System (For Hybrid Cars)

How to Start Up the Hybrid System

Check that the parking brake* is applied.
(Step down on the pedal, leaving it in the downward position.)

Firmly step down on the brake pedal. The Smart Entry and Start System signal light turns on.

Press the POWER switch briefly, but all the way.

Check that the READY indicator is lit. You can drive even while the gasoline engine is turned off if the READY indicator is lit. In response to the car's condition, the gasoline engine will automatically start up or turn off.

How to Turn Off the Hybrid System

Stop the car completely. Apply the parking brake, and press the P Position Switch. (Depending on the model, move the shift lever to P.)

Press the POWER switch. Release your foot from the brake pedal and check that the indications on the dashboard meters are off.

How to Use the Shift Lever in a Prius

Some vehicles, such as Noah HEV and Voxy HEV are equipped with the same type of shift lever.
Below is an explanation of how to use the distinctive shift lever of Prius, a popular hybrid car.

How to Move the Shift Lever

Operate the shift lever gently but firmly. Release your hand from the shift lever after using it. The shift lever returns to the ● position on its own.

The signal light showing the shift position turns on at the position it is currently in, as shown in the photo above.

P Position Switch

To change the shift position to P, press the P Position Switch rather than using the shift lever.

Be sure to check that the P is lit on the shift position signal light.

Shift Position State and Purpose How to Operate
P Parks and starts up hybrid system Press the P Position Switch when the car is completely stopped.
R Backs up Move the shift lever to the right and upward along the shift gate.
Perform this operation while firmly stepping down on the brake pedal.
N A state where no driving force occurs Move the shift lever to the right along the shift gate, and hold it there for a bit.
Perform this operation while firmly stepping down on the brake pedal.
D Normal drive* Move the shift lever to the right and downward along the shift gate.
Perform this operation while firmly stepping down on the brake pedal.
B When on terrains like steep downward slopes and strong engine braking is necessary Move the shift lever downward along the shift gate.
Switching to B is possible only when the shift position is in D.

*Use D in normal situations for improvement of fuel efficiency and noise reduction.

Main Warning Lights

ABS & Brake Assist Warning Light

This light turns on when there is an abnormality in the ABS or brake assist system. This assures you that the normal brakes are functioning properly. When functioning normally, the light turns on and turns off after a few seconds when turning on the engine switch.

SRS Airbag/Pretensioner Warning Light

This light turns on or blinks when there is an abnormality in the SRS airbag or pretensioner-equipped seatbelts. When functioning normally, the light turns on and turns off after a few seconds when turning on the engine switch.

Engine Warning Light

This light turns on when there is an abnormality in the engine or transmission system. When functioning normally, the light turns on when turning the engine switch on, and turns off when the engine is running.

Brake Warning Light

This light turns on when the engine switch is on, and the parking brake is applied or there is a shortage of brake fluid. If this warning light turns on while driving, pull the car over immediately to a safe place.

Battery Charge Warning Light

This light turns on when there is an abnormality in the charging system while turning over the engine. There may be insufficient generation of electric power. The battery may die when using the car with the light remaining lit.

Oil Pressure Warning Light

This light turns on when there is an abnormality in the engine's oil pressure while turning over the engine. Continuing to drive while the light is on may result in damage to the engine.

Low Fuel Warning Light

This light turns on when the engine switch is on, and there is not much fuel remaining (the level of fuel sways and changes on hills or along curves, and can turn on prematurely depending on the situation). Quickly refuel if it turns on.

Door Ajar Warning Light

This light turns on when one of the doors is not properly shut. Do not drive while the warning light remains lit. Check that all of the doors are closed.

Seat Belt Warning Light

This light turns on when the engine switch is on, and the seatbelt on the driver's side or passenger's side is not fastened. Fasten your seat belt immediately.
